Mechanics of Gauging a Trade
cj fleury was awarded this City of Ottawa public-art commission based on her approach to collaboration; opening up and sharing the creative process with over 200 municipal maintenance workers at the City's brand new Buildings and Equipment Facility. Provided with an on-site studio, she welcomed the men and women into all phases of research, conception and development, then worked with the structural welding crew to engineer, fabricate, install and name the major piece for the building's entry plaza. 11 additional artworks were created during the residency, as a method of building trust, opening lines of communication and responding to the energy and events of the site's first tumultuous year.
This project was the first-of-its-kind-in-Canada and is held as a model in arts, academic and civic contexts.
